day 08 – a song you know all the words to

OHHH the songs I could have picked for this one. I know a lot of words to a lot of songs, but one in particular jumped out at me when I saw what Day 8 was.

I like to think I have an eclectic music taste. I like a little bit of everything, unless you’re screaming at me or you’re too twangy (see day two of this challenge for an example – and while you’re at it, check out one, three, four, five, six and seven).

That said, my middle school years and a good portion of high school were dedicated to rap, among others. I knew all the words to almost all of Eminem’s first album, I made my sister listen to rap in the morning with me when I drove her to school my senior year (her freshman year)…. oh. And Nelly? Don’t even get me started. I love him.

Sidenote: A kid I interviewed for something for the newspaper I used to work for asked me if I knew who Nelly was because he’s his favorite singer. I said, “Um, yeah, I was listening to him before you were born.” And then I said, “So suck it.” Only not really but I put that as my Facebook status and I think one of my aunts was convinced I talk like that to elementary-schoolers.

But I’m not picking a Nelly song for Day 8.

Nope. I’m picking a song that I knew and loved back in the day. Seventh grade.

Day 8 – Song you know all the words to.

It was before Puff was Diddy or Dirty Money or P.Deezy or whatever he goes by these days. Biggie had already died (R.I.P) and Ma$e rapped on it too. Speaking of, where is he these days?

So yeah – Biggie, Puffy, Ma$ey’s “Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems.” I know the whole thing. That’s right. It’s a classic.

day 07 – a song that reminds you of a certain event

You see, I’ve got these seven friends from college. They’re kind of my soulmates.

I’d try to explain how all the friendships started and the great times we’ve had and what I love about each of them but I’d probably have to start a completely separate blog to have enough room for all that.

So, suffice it to say, they’re amazing and I love them all and we try to reunite for a weekend of ab-workout-like laughter at least once a year. We call it CKR. And every time we get together it’s a guaranteed 48+ hours of pure hilarity and us trying not to remember that we don’t live in the same city anymore.

The very first reunion we had was in Ashley’s apartment and it’s where so much started. And it’s where we all drunkenly sang this song to each other and every time I hear it I’m reminded of that first CKR and the fact that I love those kids and can’t imagine my life without ’em.

Day 7 – Song that reminds you of a certain event.

Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” We WILL sing it pretty much every time we’re together. We’ll add a couple f-bombs to it that aren’t in the original and no one will understand what our deal is. And that’s why I love it.

And OMG I forgot how super-dramatic the video is….

Oh hey – missed the first six days of the 30 Day Song Challenge? Or do you just want to hear some of ’em again?

No prob. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

day 06 – a song that reminds you of somewhere

I like where I live, and with the exception of college and the couple years after I graduated, I’ve always lived here, in Louisville.

If I had to live anywhere else? There’s a very good chance it’d be Mandeville, Jamaica.

So when I got to the sixth day of this 30 Day Song Challenge, I knew the perfect song to choose.

Day 6 – Song that reminds you of somewhere.

I’ve been to Jamaica twice. And the scenery, the people and the feeling I get when I’m there are like nothing I’ve ever found anywhere else. When I’m there, I’m happy. I mean, I’m happy here, of course, but things are different there. It’s hard to explain.

I have so many good memories from my trips to Jamaica.

And that’s what this song reminds me of.

A little backstory? This last time we went – in 2009 – we spent a lot of time on a bus, going to various tourist spots, church activities and to our respective homes each night. We listened to the same CD pretty much every time and by the end of the week – much to the dismay of a couple of the chaperones (not Sara or me, we loved it) the American contingent of the passenger group had learned all the words to a song our Jamaican friends already knew well.

Those trips bring us together. We share experiences and those bus rides were just part of them.

And it never fails to make me smile when I think of all of us, our church group and our Jamaican family, singing this song every single day, sometimes to each other, sometimes as we looked out the window and took it all in and wished a week was a lot longer.

Jah Cure, “Call on Me.” A song that will forever remind me of an amazing country and the equally amazing people I met there.

P.S. Missed the first five days? No worries. Day 1. Day 2. Day 3. Day 4. Day 5.

day 05 – a song that reminds you of someone

It’s getting hard to narrow down the possible song choices for this challenge. I could come up with a few for each day.

Just joining us? Here’s days uno, dos and tres of the 30 Day Song Challenge. Oh, and quatro.

Day 5 – Song that reminds you of someone.

I’m not gonna go into this one too much, the song pretty much speaks for itself. It reminds me of a situation with a particular boy – not one that I’m dealing with right now, but one that was a pretty big deal for a pretty long time. Sucks how it ended up working out, but I don’t regret it. It taught me what I do – and definitely don’t – want in my next boyfriend.

Plus, Jason Mraz sings it and he might be my next boyfriend. He just doesn’t know it yet.

Jason Mraz, “You and I Both.” My favorite of all of his songs. Ever. Yeah. It’s that good.

P.s. Just start the video and read something else – it’s not a music video, just the song. But it’s the acoustic version and I love it and I picked it. It’s my blog. I do what I want.

day 04 – a song that makes you sad

30 songs in 30 days. Challenge accepted. And we’re already four days in. Don’t believe me? Check out one, two, and three.

Day 4 – Song that makes you sad.

I cannot tell you how long it has been since I’ve heard this song. When I looked up the video on youtube to put in this post I found one and quickly did the copy and paste thing.

I know the song so well, I can hear the first few notes and that’s it – I change the channel, leave the room or turn the radio off completely. Because it’s that or do the ugly cry in front of whoever I’m with. And it’s called an ugly cry for a reason..

Few songs have made me cry as much as this one did does always will.

He loves her so much, he’s loved her all his life…it sounds like a sweet song and then it gets to the emotional, sob-inducing ending. Dammit, Tim McGraw…

Tim McGraw’s “Don’t Take The Girl.” Hope you’ve got some Kleenex nearby…

day 03 – a song that makes you happy

30 days. 30 songs. We’re at number 3.

Here’s one. And two.

Day 3 – Song that makes you happy.

It’s one of my all time favorite songs. It makes me think of singing along with my sisters in the car and trying to get our voices to go that high. I dare you to listen to it and not even smile a little.

It also makes me think of Baby Einstein doing her spot-on impression of the Mad TV ‘Can I Have Yo Numba’ guy and that, too, makes me happy.

Mika’s “Grace Kelly.” Seriously, like it or not, that sucker’s catchy. And happy. Even if you can’t hit the high notes.

day 02 – your least favorite song

Welcome to the “30 Day Song Challenge.” I found it on Facebook, and because I love you so much, I’m sharing it with you! (Feel special, k?)

Missed numero uno? No worries, find it here.

Day 2 – LEAST Favorite Song.

This one was a tough choice, because I could really just pick any one of the songs 99.7 and 98.9 overplay the crap out of. But. Instead I’m choosing a song by the band that is my least favorite, though some – including The Roommate – have tried to convince me otherwise. To no avail.

I just can’t listen to any of their stuff. I don’t know.. Just. Can’t. Do. It.

Sugarland – Probably could have picked any of their stuff but I decided on “Stuck Like Glue” because I’ve heard it the most and it’s annoying.

Lists + music = love

Y’all know how I like lists. Well what do I like even more than lists? Music.

So why not combine the two.

There’s this thing on Facebook – the 30 Day Song Challenge. A friend of mine is participating and it looks like something I’d like to do too. So get ready for 30 days, 30 songs, one big ol’ list.

That’s not to say there won’t be other stuff on here for you to read, but now there’s the added bonus of iPod playlist suggestions. It’s a win-win!

It starts tomorrow, so get ready. And enjoy!

Also, in the words of the always awesome Barney Stinson – CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
