The other day I made my Facebook status say “anyone who calls Christmas the ‘most wonderful time of the year’ has obviously never lived in Louisville or experienced Derby season.” Truer words have never been spoken, seriously.
I have lived here the majority of my life and the first Saturday in May has always been a holiday in this town. It starts two weeks ahead of time, with this giant fireworks display that I once told people was just for my birthday because it was ON MY BIRTHDAY.
I have yet to actually go to the Derby and I’m totally fine with that. My day is just fine without it, though I’d like to see it in person at some point in my life. For example, this year my Derby day consisted of making bets and watching races and drinking Lillies and losing money and oh, I learned to move an Oreo from my forehead to my mouth without using my hands, so you know, that was cool.
Oh and then there was cigar smoking and a cornhole tournament and LCR and underwear races and the food – OH MY GOD THE FOOD. I’m telling you – most wonderful time of the year, for real.
And like Christmas, Derby is over as quick as it began. There’s all this build up and making plans and making food and “what are you doing for Derby?” and there’s this two-minute horse race and it’s over. And I love every. single. minute. of. it.
It IS the most wonderful time! Can’t wait to see you again! Thanks for everything!!
